Ok, bought this thing brand new in May 2007. Auto transmission, Tow Package (D44 rear end + trac-lok), and air conditioning were the only options.
So we are going to start with a picture of my stock jeep on my first run (2009 New Guys Run) didn't even have the swaybar disconnected:

Just talked to David@Northridge. Should get my diff covers and track bar tomorrow.
He said the Aussie still hasn't came in so he is going ahead and sending my gears and will send the Aussie later. Sending me free LubeLocker gaskets with the gears. I don't know much but from what I read about them Darrin will probably appreciate them.

Probably just leave it black though.

As a side note we did not have to use coil compressors to install the springs. The rear was super easy but installing the new springs into the front was a pain the rear. Would have been nice if I hadn't listened to the internet masterminds at project-jk and had just got the compressors.

Went to get the tires put on today. There was a mixup with the appointments so I left the wheels there tonight. They are going to mount the tires tomorrow morning and I'll bring the jeep by after work for them to put them on.
Just finished checking all the bolts to make sure they were tight. Lift makes it so much easier to get under the jeep now.

Got the tires on. They ride good on the highway but it is a little flighty. Maybe some bumpsteer I don't know. Shop did a great job balancing the tires. When the road is smooth you can let go of the steering wheel and it goes perfectly straight. Got it home, unloaded my old tires (going to sell them and the wheels for 100 bucks just to get em out of here).
Thought the 35 might fit on my stock tire carrier... so I unloaded it from the spare extension bracket. Took the bracket off and put it back on. SWEET! It fit with about 1/4" to spare!
Also I hooked my procomp accu pro and changed the tire size/shift point programming. Made a pretty good difference but man I can't wait to get my gears in.
So pics, not good quality since it was after dark when I got home sorry.

Couple of updates. Last weekend went horrible and nothing got done. Mostly my fault I guess.
1) Three wheel studs were stripped and jacked up so that had to be taken care of pronto and wasted a day.
2) The jk D44 uses THICK gears and I needed the smaller carrier ECTED instead of the larger carrier ECTED I ordered.
I'm sending the large carrier ECTED back today and have ordered the smaller carrier ECTED. Jeependude should be able to look at it next weekend and hopefully everything will get installed then.
I've been really bummed out because I was really looking forward to having it ready for the Jamboree.

welcome to the world of auto repair, I go thru this on a daily basis.
No sense in getting upset about it, plan on it in the future!
If I get a job that should take 2-3 days I schedule it for 5!
Never try to do anything right before an event you plan on attending either, seems to gurantee problems. Been doin this for over 20 years, gets worse every year with all the model changes, 20 years ago a part would fit a half dozen different vehicles, now there are 20 different parts that "could" fit one!
I love deadlines! I like the wooshing sound they make when they fly by!!!

So I've heard of Aussie ratcheting during turns. Mine seems to be the opposite though. It makes no noise during turns and ratchets when I'm decelarating and in a straight line (sometimes not always).
Any ideas? Also something is binding up awful in turns. I think it is the ECTED but I'm not sure if it is that or the aussie. If it isn't ratcheting doesn't that mean it is trying to stay locked?
edit: evidently the binding on turns is because the front end is under load somehow? that doesn't make sense since I'm 2wd. I did notice that when my drive shaft was out the front end didn't have any problems.

05-05-2010, 06:17 PM
Binding on tight turns with a mechanical locker is normal. It'll sound like your front end is all clunky.
I've never heard mine be noisy in a strait line, but I run royal purple up front for mine, and synthetic tends to quiet things down.

I had a chance to do about 4 or 5 of them. Not sure how many it will take though. I think it is ok. We thought due to the short wheel base it might be the aussie trying to lock.
It only happens when I make a tight turn like into a parking spot. The rest of the time it runs perfect.

Looked closer, it is wet on the top side of the pinion so don't think it is pinion leak. Maybe from all the assembly lube getting thrown off the driveshaft (my god there was a lot of that crap).
Cleaned the housing with brake cleaner last night to see if I can pinpoint where it is starting. As of this morning after my approx. 30 mile drive to work there was nothing on the pinion.
I think this might have just been junk from the drive shaft.

Going to go to Justin's May 28th and we are going to make measurements for him to make me some bumpers. Gotta order a winch. Right now looking at the Warn M8000. Was going to get a powerplant but after talking to some folks think I'll keep the onboard air separate.

Ordered an oil pan on 4/18. Was charged immediately and ship time was supposed to be 1-3 days. E-mailed them a week later and was told they were having problems getting the metal from their supplier.
Finally got another update today by telling them if I didn't have a shipdate by Friday I was charging back/filing complaint with Paypal/filing complaint with State AG.
They told me that they had to send the pans back to get powdercoated again and should have a ship date soon.
That was the first response I've gotten, PMs on the boards they post on, e-mails, and phone calls were unanswered until I started threatening.
Hopefully I get shipping info by Friday.
Name of the company is Benchmark Designs btw.

Company starts out ok but sometimes behind on parts. Over time it is harder and harder to get responses. By the end of the tale the company is bankrupt and the owners have disappeared with everyone else's money.

So I've been staring at the d30 in my garage and got to thinking about the future. Everyone and their mama has told me I will regret sinking real money into a d30.
So right now I've sent out some requests for quotes from some places I've ordered from in the past. Depending on what comes back I will very likely be throwing some form of d44 under the front end.
I guess i can sell the D30s for scrap or to some unsuspecting guy with a heavy foot and big tires (PHIL I'M LOOKING AT YOU).

Shoot I would really like to throw some 60's or rockwells or sumethin' under it. But I don't have that kind of money laying around. For the forseeable future (at least five more years) I'm going to be running 35" tires so I figure the 44 will stand up to that.
Now rear? heck yeah man I am going down that path eventually. I can get a built rear D60 for less than what I'm paying for the front 44.
Right now I'm being cut a pretty bangin' deal on a build brand new DynaTrac ProRock 44 so it is pretty hard to say no.

Man a 9" would be nice. I noticed that doesn't include a third member (aren't those around 2 grand)? Can you get a HP third member for a 9" with 5.13 gears? I couldn't find one on Currie's site.
Right now (I'm not done talking to them so things can change)
I'm looking at the DynaTrac ProRock 44 with upgraded tubes/ujoints (3"x.5" and 1480)
Chromoly shafts
ARB Locker and compressor
5.13 Gears
DynaTrac ProSteer Balljoints
Assembled and at my door for $4,400. I have to talk to him some more since I'm not sold on the ProSteers (500 dollars for a set of freaking balljoints?!? I don't care if you can rebuild them without removing them). I also have to make sure they don't install a JK flange and instead install a Spicer yoke when they setup the front end.

You really want to go with a ARB? I figure they are good lockers but having to rely on air to have them engaged. I would be a little iffy on it. There was a guy in our trail group that had an arb and his wiring had a short. With no air no locker. Maybe if he had a on board tank to keep a constant supply to the locker it wouldn't be that bad. I guess he had is straight from the compressor to the locker? Just something to think about. They all have there ups and downs.

Man, that same argument can be made for any of the selectable lockers just change some of the words.
ARB and OX are the top of the heap as far as I know for selectables and I can get a free compressor for the ARB still plus they have a d44 sitting in stock already setup with the gears I want and the ARB installed.

Just went outside to get something out of the garage and noticed a small puddle of oil under my jeep (I haven't put new oil in it yet since the RTV has to cure).
Got under there with a light and there is evidently a small hole in the pan where the oil still dripping out of the engine is coming out.

They surprised me how easy they were to put in after hearing a few horror stories. Put some assembly lube on the inner splines. Put the boot in place. Axle just slid right in and then I used a long handle screwdrive to push the boot into place.

LOL, Some coworkers and I were out jumping RC cars after work one day, when one of the guys had a Lipo battery expload, that was sitting in the passenger seat of his car. He grabbed it and threw it on the ground so it wouldn't burn his car down. He burned the crap out of his arm and hand.
The ambulance got there and wrapped his hand up and told him that he needed to go to the hospital, we all told him the same thing. He said "no I'm ok", after the ambulance left, he went back to running his RC car with the rest of us, until we finally convinced him to go to the hospital. He ended up having to get a skin graph on his hand.

Yeah, it is about time for my 500 mile change on it so I'll check then. Plus I have no idea what the actual capacity is on the new axle.
I just noticed the fill plug on the new axle is above the axle tubes. So if we filled it to the fill plug it is probably WAY overfilled lol. I know on the stock axle you were supposed to fill it to just past the bottom of the tube.

Went to install my winch last weekend. No mountpoints for the fairlead which sucks. Justin is going to weld me some on as soon as he gets the people to come out and build his shop so he can have a 220v outlet for his welder.
I guess I'll try to mount my lights this weekend and maybe just mount the winch for now with no fairlead? It should be ok as long as I'm not trying to pull anything at angles. Well, I don't expect to use it at all until the fairlead is on actually.

More aggrivation. I'm getting a click from the rear end that is very intermittent. Happens under very light acceleration and no acceleration. If I'm on the gas at all (even enough to maintain speed) then I get nothing. Click only happens every once in awhile.
I've got to change my diff fluid soon so instead of pulling the plug I'm going to pull the cover to make sure my gears are in good shape. If they are then that means it is my rear driveshaft binding. Evidently the rzeppas make a sound like a ratchet wrench when they start binding.
If that is the case I will be getting a Tom Woods for the rear and a set of rear uppers from Currie.

If it's intermintent it's probably not your gears, I'd check your control arms & sway bar first, my left rear upper arm bolt works it's self loose & causes a click on acceleration & braking perodically

Hadn't even though of that! I think it started after we had the rearend to work on it anyway. I'll check em when I get home.

There's a winchplate welded to my bumper I just need to get tabs welded on for the fairlead. It isn't anything hard it is just everyone being out of pocket.
Bought a small fire extinguisher and mounted it under my seat today.
Need to do some other minor things before Friday though.

I was pleased with the performance this weekend. Still want better tires. The TRXUS are chunking really bad :/. I'm leaning towards some DC Mud Country's. Dave's have worn really well and stood up to the park.
The only negative after this run was the breather tube on my front axle got pulled off at some point. Gotta put together an extension for it I guess.

I should have pictures soon. After tonight my winch should be mounted up. Brad and Phil did some awesome work on the front bumper.
Cut the flat plate on top and built a box to hold the winch; cut out a hole for the fairlead etc.
I contributed by using an angle grinder for a little while. Jed was there as well helping out.

moral support plays a big role in any project... just because you didn't get your hands dirty doesn't mean you're not the sole reason the job got finished

Got my bracket in today. Wired up the solenoid. Noticed a ground wire goes from the solenoid to the bottom of the winch so I had to unmount it. Tested the winch out and nothing blew up so I guess it is good to go.
Bought a pair of the shackles Brad and Phil were showing me to replace my teeny weeny ones. Unfortunately my 3/4" bit is too large for the chuck on my drill so I guess I have an excuse to buy a new one lol.

Bah, Brad did all the work. I "supervised".
Brad was so happy, he was like a kid that finally got to play with all his favorite toys.
That was a lot of fun. I think the 4 of us should open a fab shop now. Brad does the work, Jason and Jed can take turns with the financial stuff, and I can drink the beer.
That turned out really nice. I'm just glad to see my measuring lined up. I was a little worried about that box, it was pretty tight.
No Phil you are in charge of layout and markup.
Phil is/is going to be one heck of a fab guy once he gets his hands on the right tools.

I believe it. He sells himself short with that stuff.
So my passenger side disco is a complete PITA to remove. I mean several minutes of cursing to take it off and put it on. This is due to the reinforcement dynatrac added to the trackbar/stabilizer/UCA/LCA bracket. I need to remove maybe 1/16" of material and it should make it much easier.
It is too tight to get a grinder to. Man I really don't want to pull my draglink and tie rod just to grind some on the bracket so I guess it stays this way for awhile. Eventually I'm going to lift it higher and will probably move to an antirock by then.

fyi since I'm a noob and had to figure it out on my own. easiest way to get the new ones to fit is to place a jack under the pinion and one under the pumpking and then rotate the axle that way. the last pic you can see what I was doing.

So I started on my bushwhacker flares tonight.
44 steps... for ONE corner.
They do look REALLY nice and for plastic flares are sturdy. Only unfortunate part is I dinged my driver side bad enough the sheetmetal doesn't meet with the flare in a couple of places. Oh well lol. Once I finish fri/sat I'll go ahead and post pictures.
