It's a swapped in 1.6 8V I believe. It is FI. If you like the throttle you probably wouldn't be happy with it, but I think it is fine for a crawler.

5.71 in the axles and 4.16 in the Tcase. I'd love to do a doubler, but will probably just do 6.5 in the Tcase eventually.

Though very differant. Its cool to see something new. I always love uniqe rigs. I deff. thing that you got the 38 special rig topped, even with a far smaller buget. only thing I would have liked to see is a longer front coil. I link that you will always be chasing coils down the trail after they fall out when the suspension drops.

Heath, what bender do you have? Homemade? I see an air-over-hydro ram from Harbor Freight

What paint?

How do you plan to do the brakelines? Hopefully not welding on tabs now that it's painted :o

Lookin' good, mayne!

xjpaddler
12-12-2009, 08:30 AM
the bender is homeade, the pics of the first one are at the beging of this thread. I built it for work to bend scd 80 pipe. it is what I done the buggy, and bronco gage with. Since then I have built another one, that accepts pro tools dies. it is much more accuret, but a little slower.

as for attaching the brake lines, no I do not plan on welding tabs, I think I can use some fastners from work and use the front side of the truss.

still undecided on the color of the buggy, I really like the burgundy, or peterbuilt red that is on the calipers. maybe that for the chasis, with black skins, detailed in silver like the axles.

may even have to get CJ to do some flames some where:)

Jordan7118

Paint sounds good. What paint did you use for the axle?

Picked up the same ram you have yesterday. Gonna convert my JD2 to air over hydro and put it on a rollable stand / cart.

thenks James, Hows yours coming??? Just got another project drug in, cant say much other than it is going to be a beast.I hope to have it done by Feb. Hunting season, the holidays, working 6 days a week all kinda ganged up on me. :P We go back to 2/2/3 work schedule in Jan. so ill finally have some time off to start working on it again.

New radius arms, hopefully an engine cage, Superiors/CTM's in the front and a Strange 3rd/spool out back. I also need to build some kind of traction bar as it seems my right foot and rear leaves do not get along very well. :D

been a while since an update, hope to be back on track, and hope to wheel my own rig for the new years run.

picked up a set of trail gear rock assult axles, fully loaded.
rear has chromos, 5/29s spool and a v6 third, with trail gear disk brakes.

front has a high pinion 5/29s with a detriot, dirty 30 chromos, 6 shooter knuckles with trunion bearing eliminator kits, and six shooter high steer arms.

also got some race line suspension seats. here is a couple pics should have some more comeing pretty soon.

and the seats mounted
http://i341.photobucket.com/albums/o370/xjpaddler/buggy%20pics/PA100056.jpg

going to keep the theme of the rat rod, so some old school ram horns came into play, got lucky and the original y pipe from a 60s nova worked perfect.
http://i341.photobucket.com/albums/o370/xjpaddler/buggy%20pics/PA100054.jpg

got a little tech for the build, I have been trying to figure out a cheap way to do the carrier bearing for my front shaft. after racking my brain for way to long it ocurred to me that I could use the front out put shaft that was left over from my doubler.this would give an already exsisting bearing surface, and a splined yoke that would be removable.
http://i341.photobucket.com/albums/o370/xjpaddler/buggy%20pics/PA280063.jpg
http://i341.photobucket.com/albums/o370/xjpaddler/buggy%20pics/PA280064.jpg
the machined surface was 1.75 so a quick trip to the bearing house and 18$$ later and I was a happy person. I ground the spline of the back so that it would fit into my drive shaft, just got to weld it up.
also got the front skins and hood started

The Hood/Grill section is removeable. So one you take a few bolts off you can lift that off, and the engine is just sitting right there on the frame rails so it is easily accessible. Best part is that when the hood/grill is bolted on it looks pretty much seamless, so it isn't really obvious that it is removeable in pictures.

like x2 said front clip unbolts so that you can get to everything.

the dual master cylinder is one for the front and one for the back, this is what we did on andrews and it stops well so I am going to give it a try on this hope it all works out.

as for color I hope to have some teaser pics this weekend.

39.5/16.5/15 pitbull rockers. this gave me 13.5" under the diffs and a belly of 20.75. Top of the cage is 74 at its hieghest point.

also got some more pannels painted and the firewall in place.

Well I helped Heath get all the brake lines flared, and bent up, and we almost had the brakes complete. Then when we were bleeding the rear brakes, we found that both rear calipers were bad. So I had to come to the house, but Heath was running to exchange the calipers. Hopefully he got the new ones, and got finished putting it all together this evening! I think all he really needs is his front drive shaft, and wiring the winches up, and several other small things, and he will be good to go. Man is it looking sweet though.
