Welp, I think it's time to post up my trash here as well :hi:

In Febuary of 2005, my parents got me this wonderful ride for graduation. I have a 98 Jeep GC 2wd as a DD. Went to college, and after many months deciding whether to sell, build, or buy, I decided in May 2007 to start building it up. First was an engine rebuild on the tired 22RE - almost 200,000 on the clock, but I probably abused it a little... Stupid mud... :ghey:

Here's where I'm at:
Got it rollin' last night. Put all the front axle together, so it was time to go in. Shootin' for a flat belly, so the tranny tunnel got cut up. Have an All-Pro E-brake kit, so I had to cut some more out. I'm thinkin' the horsecollar crossmember is next.

Here's a link to my build on MarlinCrawler
http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=40053.120

I'll try to keep it somewhat updated here as well. I'm hoping to wheel soon, as I'm tired of being a web-wheeling college kid. It's pretty boring. Thanks for looking :thanks:

Not much new.

Went to Memphis this weekend and picked up the meats - 38.5 x 14.5/15 TSL SXs. Looking forward to runnin' them soon. Also picked up a Ford F150 tank to run behind the rear axle. More on that later.

Looking forward to getting some stuff wrapped up, possibly this week. Busy as hell with school, job, research, girlfriend, life... Geesh!

BIG UPDATE:
Went home this weekend and made some good progress.

First I pulled the plugs and turned it over for a while. Then I put them in and turned it over for a while. After about a minute it started sputtering a little, so I just kept going. Eventually it fired up! Well kinda. I'll talk more about that later.

SO, I went back to the parts runner, and Glen is right. I must have not looked closely enough. I pulled the rear flex line off and put it on the front of Snoop. Works great. I have about 3 feet of brake line on each side now :gap:

I found a leak in my power steering, though. It comes from the top of the box where the adjuster screw (???) is. I pulled off the nut, and I think I need a new seal for that. Any thoughts? Is that all I might need?

I cut down the rear driveshaft and welded it back together a little shorter. I didn't have any 2.5" sch. 40, so this is just temporary.

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/Miscellaneous/DSC01267.jpg

So that night I finally got all the systems working and decided to give it a run. I was so excited that I didn't realize until after I got back that I drug a drop light all the way up and down the street :smack: I pulled out of the lean-to and had almost no power. I had to put it in low to get it out of there. Something wasn't right...

After a quick spin, I brought it back and flexed it out. Man, those front springs are champs! The rears - not so much. I think the overload has to go. It keeps the packs pretty stiff. I might pull the bottom leaf above the overload because it's not moving much, but the overload is about right for keeping the tires out of the wheelwells. Man, it flexes pretty nice, though. Mainly the front :disturbed:

I forgot to take pics before I took off the big tires for transport. Sorry...

Snoop's been at Bullett's Automotive in Hot Springs for almost two weeks now. I had a computer for the engine shipped to them from one of the boards. I tried calling them today to see if it arrived, but it seems the don't have phone in lieu of the recent storms.

So, what ya think ???

I guess I'm about due for an update

Came to the park this weekend. Really enjoyed meeting some of the club. Enjoyed the recovery demonstration, too. Overall, great weekend.

Ran Ultimate Adventure with no problems. Tried a harder line on Shaffner's Hollow. I think I've learned my lesson :( No more shenanigans until I have body protection.

Welp, good news. I finally got around to building a bumper and mounting the winch. Actually, it was mostly due to Michael Faber (gittinit) of Faber 4x4 Fabrication in Pargould.

I found this Marlin Crawler bumper in the Cabot U Pull It before I left for Belize. Finally mounted it up. I dig it. Especially for the price.

I also forgot to mention that I put in some expanded metal between the winch and radiator to give a small amount of support back to the radiator support and also to make darn sure my rope or cable doesn't tear into my radiator. I don't think it will be that close, but just to be sure.

You can see the lattice pattern behind the grill if you look closely in this picture.

A little update...

I pulled out the winch, sandpapered all the connections on the solenoids, and it works now.

Put the synthetic on the winch. Almost burned up the motor putting the 100' on it  Found out my winch was made in 1995, so maybe that's why

Then, put on some hook loops for the cable. BUT, I put them a little too close... so I have to put some more further out... Haha! Oh well. Always something.

Fixed, mounted, cabled
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/Snoopy/DSC03065.jpg

The hook loops - knowing now that these won't work as hoop loops, I should've made them from 1.5" tube for a little more strength.

Replaced the knuckle studs last night with ARP studs. Hope that's a done deal.

Went wheelin' yesterday. It rained until about 11:00 or so. Then it turned into a decent day.

Shortly after we began wheeling, a grinding noise developed from the engine compartment. I thought, "Great, I have to redo the timing chain for the fourth time...)". I was about to load up after lunch (thanks for cooking, Brad!) when Randy Smith strolled over to chat. I told him what was up, and he began troubleshooting. Soon, a couple other people came over and checked it over, including Brian Belcher, Phillip (RubiWho), Shawn, and Jed. Ideas were tossed out, like a dropped valve, power steering pump going out, power steering idler pulley bearing (which is true in that it's noisy), fan, fan clutch... But eventually one of those guys noticed that the fan pulley wasn't tightened very well. I tightened that up, and it was fixed!

Thanks to all those who helped troubleshoot my engine. I went from very disappointed to very relieved in about 10 minutes.

Had a good run on Four Fingers with Randy, Brian, Phillip, and a TJ. We all had quite a bit of trouble with the first slab. It was a good run, though.

I'll be back at the park this Thursday afternoon through Monday sometime. All are welcome to come join me and the other Toyotas that are coming for TTORA Takeover  Aug. 7, 8, and 9th.

Just a little update for ya.

I took Snoop to the TTORA Takeover and had a blast. I now have a couple problems...

Snoop has a nice n' nasty gangster lean to the passenger side. I think I bent a spring on my last trip. I had to throttle on one spot too much and think that might be the cause.

So now I'd like to do some rebuilding. Here's what I'm thinking:

Body / Armor

- Bob ~ 12" off the back and put on a pickup tailgate and end. I don't use the window anyways, and I'd like to trim the bottom up.

- Rock rails / sliders - 2"x6" square tube to replace rocker panels. I might take them up further, but I'm not sure the extra work is worth the couple extra inches clearance. People run sliders with great results. I would like to put a small "boatside" effect to it. The 2x6 will give me a good platform to mount and exo when the time comes... and it needs to come soon :smack:

- Tranny tunnel - If I do the rock rails, I could make a sub-frame to mount my seats and free up some more space for a tranny tunnel. I really need to put sheetmetal over that stuff, as it gets really hot over time. So hot I can just about not take it.

- Full belly skid - need to protect my cases now :smack: I have the metal, just need to do it. Should I run UHMW and a lighter backing plate??? I hear that stuff is the *******!

Suspension

- Front - springs need to be pulled and examined. New bushings, probably. Take out anti-wrap spring and put in one with less arch.

- Rear - pull these springs apart as well. new bushings probably needed. Will run Toyota bushings, as they seem to be a straight swap with F150s. Would like to do a pivot-block on the perch. French in front spring hangers, and sink rear spring hangers into frame or put on top of rail. ANTI-WRAP BAR is much needed. Will figure that out after I redo the springs.

Gas tank

- F150 gas tank might have to go. It's too big for a trail-only vehicle. I think I only use about 5 gallons a day wheeling, so this baby is just too much for me. Might build a cell like Mossyrocks did, or I might buy a small 10 gallon cell and put it where the current tank is. Just too much...

Winch

- have had some trouble with my synthetic. Not sure if I'm going to pull it off and run cable (got brand new steel cable for free...) or take off SKY's UHMW hawse fairlead (it's crap...) and replace with aluminum. Just don't know...

Post up your thoughts!

I'm just too hard on stuff.

During a night run, I allowed it to get spooled in on one side due to an assumption on my part - I assumed the guy letting it spool in knew what he was doing because he runs synthetic. It got wedged between the mounting plate and the drum and was torn to hell. Had to cut off about 25' and lost my sweet aluminum crimps

I picked up some cable and a roller fairlead for free, so I might just run that stuff. However, I also bought an aluminum fairlead to replace that UHMW fairlead that I think chafes the rope, so maybe I'll try that out first...

I just don't know :vrolijk_1:

Sounds like user error, I will never go back to cable. If it had been cable, you probally would have torn the winch or drum up.

Yep, user error.

Good point on tearing up stuff. I didn't think about that. Maybe this was an inexpensive lesson to learn to be more careful.

I think I'll mount up the aluminum Hawse and see how it works.

I'd stick with the synth. & dont let any morons spool your line.
if he would have done that with steel you may have needed a new winch.
I have seen people break the drum from wadding up the cable on one side & you can not un spool it without destroying it, frayed cable sucks plus you cant tie a knot in it & keep winching.
my .02$ & I still have steel on mine, but it will get synth. when its time has come!

Finally got some work done this weekend. Long post, I apologize...

I do a lot of lookin' and thinkin'. When I finally got around to looking at what I had, I just said "eff it, I'll make this work."

To note, I only got one slider and fender cut done. I do slow, deliberate work. It's what my mom call's "over analysis paralysis".

From the crossmember project, I had about 16 feet left of 1.5" x 4" x.120 wall tube. I decided to make this work. I also had some 1.5" x 1.5" x.120 wall tube, and I thought that would make good legs.

Here's the final product (for now). I'll explain what I did after the pic.

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/Snoopy/DSC03612.jpg

I cut up to the door line for the 1.5" legs to fit up as high as possible. I cut legs at a 45* angle to meet the large tube. This gave the big tube a downward 45* slope, as I thought that would be the best angle to rub 'dem rocks. I also put a 55* angle on the end caps for some good rubbin'.

I have a 4 legs in total, and I was able to weld all the way around the legs. I didn't use a scab plate for these legs, but I think they'll be okay. Michael Faber mentioned tying these legs off to the body mounts, and I may still do that.

After looking at the rock rail further, I'm thinking about putting some 1.5" tube from near the bottom of the frame angled up to where the 1.5" meets the big tube, and then attaching a plate for more sliding. This wouldn't be much more trouble, would add triangulation, and would keep stuff from getting under the pinch weld. The pinch weld is now the lowest point aside from the 4" tube. I'll wheel and see if it's necessary.

I used Rustoleum Hammered paint from a can. I applied with a roller, and I really like the finish. It seems tough enough for what I'm about to do to it, and touch ups will be a breeze. Highly recommended.

More pics:

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/Snoopy/DSC03611.jpg

I scuffed the rocker panel and sprayed it black before putting on the slider. Hard to tell, but this pic is the best for seeing it.

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/Snoopy/DSC03613.jpg

The worst of the four bottom welds. I got good penetration, though, on all the rest.

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/Snoopy/DSC03614.jpg

For the rear fender work, I'm thinking about bending some tube around that and attaching to the slider for a clean look. Plus, sheetmetal work is a pain in the ***, I can already feel it... I left a small amount of the outer fenderwell to lap weld in the new sheet.

Also, a buddy and I put on an aluminum fairlead last week. Looks like I'll be runing synthetic still  I ordered some more crimps to lock up the cable again. I liked how that looked last time, so I'll try it again.

I have a friend selling a bender with a 1 5/8" die (I know, I know... who the hell uses 1 5/8" tube... It's what we can get around here readily... and it's what die he has). Hopefully I can pick it up for a good price. Any recommendations for price on a JD2 model 3, degree ring, stand, handle and 1 5/8 x 180* die? I have an idea, but looking for reinforcement.

No, Snoop's not ready for linking (money, knowledge, time, not to that stage yet...)

I'm frenching in the spring hangers for the rear springs. It'll lower the belly a little and make a smooth transition from belly/frame to springs.

Good eye, though!

Went to Cass, Arkansas (Byrd's Adventure Center) this weekend. Had a great time with the ARTTORA crew. Always a pleasure hangin' with them.
Snoop only had a couple minor setbacks. Towards the end of the first day, he started draining t-case gear oil out the back. Wasn't really worried, as I thought it was just the t-case mount needing to be tightened. Tightened it the next morning, put in some more oil, and it still seemed to come out the rear output... But then going down steep steep hills it came out the tranny shifter base ??? I hope to make a different t-case mount sometime soon.

Very nice pics!!! That looks like a lot of fun. I'll try not to miss out on the next visit there.

If I understand you correctly, it sounds like your leaking fluid from your case to your trans and visa-versa. It could leak from the rear seal (due to being full from the transfer of fluid from the transmission) and heat expansion and it would leak from the shifter because that is not meant to be sealed. Just thinking outside the box. Lemme know if I'm in the wrong box.:lolk:

Jordan7118
11-28-2009, 08:40 PM
Thanks for the compliments, fellas :D

I'm not sure about the fluid issue. I'll try to fix it first by tightening up the output flange on the rear t-case. If that doesn't work, then I'll replace the rear seal. I'll also tighten up the shifter bases.

I'd like to make a new mount that uses the bottoms of the t-cases like the Toyota engineers designed them. However, it's difficult to use these without sacrificing ground clearance, as the rubber factory-style mounts are about 3" high. Ideally, I'd make a mount that goes from a bushing on one framerail to the bottom of the t-cases to a bushing on the other framerail. That's difficult to do due to the front driveshaft. It'll work for now. We'll see how this all develops... :D

Dang't, Mike! I'm in top secret research mode :lipsrsealed:

Here's the plan:
- D300 behind Toyota crawl box with 4.7 gears - twin sticked
- French rear spring hangers
- Relocate rear shackle hangers
- Lower front a little
- Minimalist exo
- Bob
- Full flat belly skid
- New seats - I saw Chris had some for sale, but by the time I re-upholster, could've paid a little more to get exactly what I want
- Transmission tunnel
- Shave out drain plug on rear axle
- Hydro assist
- Anti-wrap bar

SO, it's really just a matter of time, parts, and money :cheesy:j

School is stickin' it to me, so I'm having to work hard to find time to get in the garage.

Still got the Toys.

Tons will pay for themselves after I sell the Toy stuff, but I have to drop some money to swap them in to recover my costs on the tail end. I don't have that money right now. Plus <knock on wood> the Toys have done pretty well for me. Never broken anything in the axle department. Heck, really only broke a transfer case housing due to my own stupidity

So, <knock on wood> Toys will hold up until the Tons are ready to roll.

I really like the twin stick and front dig capability, but I'm thinking another crawl box would be nice. Right now I have 4.7s followed by the 2.62 D300. I'd like to have stock 2.28 then stock 2.28 then 2.62. That way I could have the D300 and rear crawl box in low with the front crawl box for real technical stuff. About the same crawl ratio, but I'd be able to use the D300 in low instead of more gearing in front of it.

Overall, very pleased with the performance. Glad to have a trans tunnel, and the lap belts are pretty nice. I caught my self reaching for the shoulder belts about 10 times that weekend

Time for some updates.

Finally found a pump. Thanks goes out to Sgt. Brian and his connection back east, I was able to pick up a brand new pump for $60 shipped. Not terrible me thinks.

This weekend, I borrowed a trailer (way too narrow, no trailer brakes / wiring, pretty sketch) and a truck (brother's lifted Z71 - lifted 6" so kinda sketch, too...)

I was able to plumb and wire a 2WD Toyota gas tank in a cradle I made between the rollbar (ghetto, I know...). I cut some holes in the bed and put some grommets to protect the lines / hoses.

For cheap, I think it turned out pretty well. The intention was to have a smaller tank that wasn't wide and flat (Ford tank). I think it fills the bill at 10~12 gallons, all Toyota, easily removable for servicing, easily filled, etc.

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/DSC04698.jpg
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/DSC04699.jpg

After that, I was able to drive Snoop onto the trailer. I rolled over to Chris - ActionFab's shop - on 70West / Airport Rd. I got there about 5 o'clock on Saturday. Drove Snoop off the trailer, parked him halfway into the 2nd bay (Jeep taking up most of the bay), then started tear down.

My idea was to use 3.5" x 1/4" wall square tube to make the frenched section. However, Chris thought it'd be easier to just cut out a pocket, kinda like the other frenching kits - Datin Fab, for example. I happened upon some thick pipe and thought it'd work.

So, after many hours of fabbin', measurin', hopin', I finally was able to hang the 6" All-Pro springs I got from Sean a while ago (thanks, Sean!). They're a little tall, but now Snoop is more Mexican-ride looking than Baja pre-runner lookin' like before. Should help with climbs, and springs should really help with traction and anti-wrap.

I made sleeves for the 18MM bushings to bring them to standard 5/8" bolts. Glad I did that. So, all 6 bushings (shackle hanger) take 5/8" bolts. I had to move the rear shackle hanger back about 6". Less angle than I'd like (a little steep), but these springs have a ton of arch.

Frenched section
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/DSC04693.jpg

Previous spring hanger - tried to turn it into more of a sloping ramp because I couldn't remove the whole plate
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/DSC04696.jpg

Springs - little more arch than I'd like, so make take out some leaves. Also, still have to put on new spring perches at the axle to get rid of caster correction shims.
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/DSC04697.jpg

Saddest part of the whole thing was that Snoop wouldn't drive back on the trailer. Gave it gas, and the more throttle I gave, the less he wanted to move. Eventually, he wouldn't even start. Back to the drawing board on the engine electronics. It's throwing an AFM and TPS code.

I'd rather have engine stuff to deal with than fabrication (I say that now...). I can swap on "new" sensors and be back in the game (hopefully) faster than I could build and put on the spring hangers. So, main goal was accomplished.

Well, it's a long story...

So I had flat Ford tank that was taking up some serious real estate right above the rear axle. Mounting shocks was going to be very very difficult.

I have 14" Bilsteins to mount. It's just a matter of time and doing it. Plus, they may be a little too long :embarassed:

Yes, frugal, but that's not the reason here - time issues and formerly space issues.

The hop isn't bad - it's the wrap that was awful.

Not much going on with Snoop lately.

Fixed a fuel pump / AFM issue.

Sold the SXs on beadlocks to a friend.

Bought some 40" LTBs. Sold those before I even ran them.

Pieced together a set of 40" Creepy Crawler stickies and a red-label spare.

Going home this weekend. Plan to weld up some DIY beadlocks onto Cragar Soft 8 lookalike rims. Hope to mount the (2) Creepies that in Hot Springs to see how much I'm going to have to cut outta Snoop. Ooops!

Good luck. 40s will be pushing it on toy drivetrain but it is mostly dependant on how you drive. I didnt read through the entire thread so what upgrades to axles and drivetrain do you have? I am curious because i am going to eventually run a 37 or 39.5 on mine so trying to figure out the parts list to get the best longevity out of everything.

I've been running 38.5 SXs for the past 3 years with very limited breakage.

I took my wallet out of my pocket, opened it up, and dumped it on my Toyota drivetrain :D

They're built - Longs, HP 5.29 ARB front, chromo hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs, 5th stud on Marlin Crawler arms, blah blah blah.

Knock on wood, I've been pretty fortunate with breakage. I've broke a rear stock shaft, but that's about it. Granted, I do drive like a grandma in a school zone.

Toyota drive shafts are super stout. Unless you need more slip for the front shaft, there's really no reason to "upgrade" to anything but good, factory OEM Toyota. Some people put a CV joint on the rear shaft to help with driveline vibes, but that's about it.

Did you upgrade either output shaft of the t-case?I sure did - to a Dana 300 :D

When I ran Toyota duals, I had 23-spline 2.28 stock gears to 23-spline Marlin Crawler 4.7 gears. Perfect combo, in my opinion. Trying to be different caused a lot of headaches, but the D300 is a little bit stouter than Toyota stuff.

I wouldn't upgrade output shafts unless you really think you need to do that. All depends on your driving style. Toyota stuff is pretty stout from the factory, all things considered.

not to jump in on Jordans build, but he is right, toy d shafts and u joints are extremely stout. I dont remember the exact years but late 80'searly 90's
4runner non cv shafts have something like 40 degree movement and the Toy u joints are almost 1 ton equilivent...I used these dshafts with in my mini on tons and 42's. they were not a concern at all...the dual toy cases were my only concern..but never failed.. sorry for the hijack jordan

Well in my experience and from all I have researched the stock d-shafts have fairly thin wall tubing. My rear drive shaft has so many dents in it from rocks and such that I am suprised I dont have any viberations. Last time I drove it up to Disney, I was climbing a rock ledge that wasnt too bad and hoped/slid over a bit, caught traction again with my rear tires, and split one of the rear u joints right in half. I have never had problems out of my front d-shaft that I made out of 1/4 wall square tubing but figured the rear needed to be upgraded.

Slacker, early model CV's (79-85ish) have more flex while later model single joints (85ish-95ish) have more flex. Lots of people run an early model CV with a late model single joint to get the most angle. I run a single on both ends on both of my d-shafts.

Anyway sorry for the thread jack. Please continue on with the runner and let us know how the stickys do!

IF I have stock axles and a stock case what shaft do I need.
OPTIMAL WAYS FOR THE REAR
1) You can get away with 79-85 CV in the rear May need to be shorten'd depending on the year shaft you get 84-85 is longer hen the 79-83.
2) 86-88 4cyl CV will work the v-6 is hit or miss depending on what Toyota had in stock
3) 89-95 4Runner rear NON-CV shafts cut down to length and have roughly 42 deg at the joints

OPTIMAL FOR THE FRONT
1) 89-95 4Runner rear NON-CV shafts cut down to length and have roughly 42 deg at the joints

OPTIMAL FOR THE REAR

1) 89-95 4Runner rear NON-CV shafts cut down to length and have roughly 42 deg at the joints They will work in the compound angle

OPTIMAL FOR THE FRONT

1) 89-95 4Runner rear NON-CV shafts cut down to length and have roughly 42 deg at the joints

2) Older rear 4 cyl NON-CV shafts will work but may not have enough angle depending on your amount of lift.

.

79-85 CV shafts 32 deg of motion
86 and Up shafts have 15 deg but can be moded to get 30.( IFS front 3rds dont move so Toyota did not have to build anything High angle)

Also Unless you have lengthened your drivline, dont try putting a Toy cv in front... WHY
1) inorder for it to be set correctly You need to turn the pinion up This inturn screws up your steering geometry and the rig will handle for CRAP.
2) Ok so you didnt turn the pinion up now what EASY You will overtime blow out the U-joint at the pinion because it is running out of phase from the rest of the shaft. Only 2 caps will stay greased the other 2 will run dry. ( usually when you least expect it..)

Remeber a cv shaft will take up 6-7" of room before it real starts to drop to the axle so you have basicly taken up needless space trying to get where you need to...

Sorry Jordan, some decent tech here, might help others... carry On.. see ya Friday !

I agree with everything except this. The length of the shaft has nothing to do with year it has everything to do with the transmission length and whether or not it is a reg cab truck (long or short bed), extra cab truck (long or short bed), or a 4runner.

Toy driveshaft walls are very thin. That is correct.

You can clearance an 86+ CV to get the same angularity as a 79-85 CV.

Thanks for the info!

We decided to do a little solo recovery ourselves on Saturday.

Thanks to Daryl (wanabecruisen) for being such a good sport about it.

Carnage:
- pushed in passenger side B-pillar, which made for an interesting entrance and exit for Daryl
- lost about 15 feet of synthetic due to the odd angle we had to winch

We were trying to find our group, and I got a little to anxious to find them. Took a horrible line at the crawl spot after the pinch rock (or what used to be the pinch rock) on Shaffner's. Had the chance to save it - I'm sure - by just reversing, but went full retard and throttled forward. More embarrassing than anything, but I'm glad no one got hurt - just a little pride and ego check. We all need those from time to time.

Or, the alternate story is that the one red-label caught so much more traction than the Creepies that it just flopped Snoop right over. Take your pick :D

Now... Without further adieu...

As for the stickies being worth the money, I'm not really sure how to answer that.

Stickies and regular compound both have their ups and downs. Stickies tend to be much more expensive and wear out faster. But, they offer greater traction on slick stuff. They are also harder to find used, which makes piecing a set together very difficult. The sticky gets its traction from surface area. I believe this is why people say they are best when totally bald. Regular compound seem to offer more bite in that the leading edges don't just fold over like a sticky. They are also easier to find used and at a better price. More sizes are offered in the regular compound, too.

Would I spend several months piecing together a set of stickies? At this point, I'm not sure. I made another silly move when I welded up the beadlocks. I spend well into the wee hours of the morning one Saturday night (7:00 AM to be exact... that's another story of itself...) and didn't start welding over where I had stopped the previous weld. Even with a bead of silicone over the weld, I still have some leakage issues, so I'm not sure I ever really ran a consistent air pressure. I need more time on these tires to say "yeah" or "nay" on solid investment.

Though I was denied on the slab at Ingrid's (as were most people), I was able to make the waterfall for the first time. I may be making this up, but I think I did it fairly easily considering how much trouble it gave others. Was that the tires or just a good line? I think it was the tires allowing a different line.

So, throw out the hate or the comments - I've heard it all before :D

How about a shot them beadlocks? They fit good except for the one that I replaced for you? They look good. They're exactly as I spec'd to you. I had them powdercoated flat black at work and have silver zinc-plated hardware. The bolts really look good against the flat black rings. I made an anti-cone ring at work from 3/4" x 1/4" flat plate. Work great.

Aside from the two rings that were messed up (one you found and one I found), I've also noticed that the bolt holes are a little too tight. We've talked about this, but it's difficult to put a .375" bolt through a .375" hole, especially once you consider adding some powder in those holes. I know your machine is capable of precise cuts, so you may consider opening those holes to .400" or so. The holes don't have to be exactly .375" for the .375" bolt, as all they do is allow an opening for a bolt to pass through. In other words, they aren't used as a centering hole. Would save you time on having to drill every hole - I know that must've been a pain on 10 rings @ 36 holes each :o

Also, I tried to zinc-plate the extra messed-up ring that I kept in our plater here at work. However, due to the finish of the metal, it wouldn't take the plating. So, if I wanted to do the plating in the future, I would need totally raw steel. Not your fault, but just a thought. I think it must be the pickling that our plater couldn't remove or cut through.

Overall, very pleased with the rings, Justin. Great price and great product! I'll try to get some pics soon.

I did my last set with the bigger holes and they worked great. I did them at .4375 or 7/16" and didn't have to chase them and they all fit well from what the customer told me. They were 17's also but with a wider outside ring. As far as the plating I can always get P&O steel for that but it can take up to 2 weeks for the P&O steel to be deliveried. Thanks for the input and let me know if you ever need anything else.

Overall, very pleased. He was using 3/8" bolts, I assume? How confident do you feel about cutting the holes to .400"? The plate material would only matter if I wanted to electroplate them. Not a big deal, but I didn't realize at the time that it would be a problem to plate. Powdercoating is probably overkill, anyway.

When the time comes, I will have you cut another set :vrolijk_26:

But thank you for the condolences. Snoop will find a crusher at a salvage yard before I ever think of running a PBR in paddle-tire width, and especially a bald paddle tire

That being said, I hope you're happy with the PBRs, cuz it is what it is. You and Justin can start your own little fan club for the 39.5 balloons. Don't ask Heath to join, cuz I'm pretty sure he'll decline with a middle finger salute :D

Love you, Chip... :D

Hmmmm...... Now there is a lot of love in that reply. :lolk: Hey, which tire are you looking at? Their not bald !!!! Just un-uniformly worn ...... :dankk2:

Nah, I'm a pretty big fan of being able to have some shade. Besides, I'm pretty sure I saw a FULL top on your Cherokee.

Some sun might help out that glow you got goin on. :P

Mounted (2) Creepies and the (1) spare red-label last night at a friends house north of Memphis. Took some serious time, but they seem to be holding air.

These suckers are heavy! I thought the SXs were bad. These tires and rims have got to weigh a solid 75 pounds more than my old tires

Ready to see the hype surrounding these stickies. Worth the money? I dunno... :undecided:

Maxxis Creepy Crawlers?? Was kinda looking at these in a 35" to be my next set of tires. If so, Anxious to see how they do!

They are, but I have sticky compound, also known as "cheaters" :o

From what I've heard from others and read, the Creepies are a very tough tire, wear well on the road, have decent road manners, but ultimately they're a bias. I say all that not that it matters to me, but maybe it does to you. Snoop hasn't seen street time in 4 or 5 years now.

In normal compound, they'd probably do just "okay" at the park. In my opinion, they lack the voids and biting edges of a TSL, and that really is what works best at the park. Again, that's all just my opinion. I plan to groove the centers up a little when I get time.

They certainly look killer. If they come in a 35 x 12.50, I think they'd be a decent tire to consider. Biggest problem is price. They seem to be made of gold-laced rubber.

Agreed on the price, I have been satisfied with the way the Bighorns have done just for a small entry level rig on small tires, that is the main reason I was looking at maybe staying with the Maxxis brand. I have heard and read the TSL's are best for the terrain we wheel most. Thanks for the input!

Talk to Ty before you buy any. He save me quite a bit.

Maxxis radial is a totally different animal than their bias. In my opinion, brand loyalty is overrated when it comes to tires. Get whatever works, and for me, that's a TSL or specifically an SX. The SXs I had before the Creepies worked well, are tough as nails, have good life on the trail. Problem is they're not real road friendly. I don't have enough seat time on these tires to say "yea" or "nay" on buying again. I also pieced together the set from a few people's spares, so they didn't exactly roll off the show room floor :o

A 34x10.50 LTB would work well, or bump up to a 36x12.5 SX. If you can get 'em, the 35x12.5 LTB would also be a good choice. Or, there's always a radial choice if you do more street than trail and don't want to suffer through a bias. The Kevlar MT/Rs, MT/Rs, BFG KM2, Toyo / Nitto mud terrains all work well on the street with only minimal sacrifice at the park. Lots of good tires out there. All depends on what you wanna do and how much you wanna spend. And everyone has an opinion on tires.

Hope that helps!
