So I happened upon this CJ5 that I know has been owned by at least two other Arkansas Crawlers (maybe even 3), and the price was right so I acquired it to build it up into my next rig.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b258/Jhamilton_/CJ5/CJdriversside.jpg
I got my AMC 360 bolted up the newly acquired TF727 trans, and my Klune/D20 combo.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b258/Jhamilton_/CJ5/AMC360.jpg
Not 100% sure that this is the AMC360 that will be going in it, because I picked up another one last night, that only has 30k miles on it, and already has the HEI distributor and the one wire alternator that I was going to try to aquire for mine.
Got the front clip pulled off of it, and the body off the frame. Heath is going to take the frame to sandblast it for me, since he is such a great guy. In the meanwhile I got the firewall ready to paint, and painted it with Eastwoods version of POR15. I have a little bit of rust to deal with on the tub that I will very likely do tonight.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b258/Jhamilton_/CJ5/CJframe.jpg
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b258/Jhamilton_/CJ5/CJfirewall.jpg
Once I get the frame back from Heath sandblasting it, I plan on outboarding the front springs, and using the Waggy leaves I got from Lightning to stretch the front around 4 inches, and then four linking the rear and stretching it around 10 inches. That should get me close to 100" wheelbase.
I also picked up a set of tube fenders for it as well.

It is actually a dana 20 from an early bronco, and the thing between it and the transmission is a Klune doubler.

U don't mess around do you? How hard was it to get that body off?
Murph
X2elite
12-08-2010, 10:37 AM
Had the body off the very next day after you saw it. Not hard at all. Had all of the body mounts loose in about 30-45 minutes (would have gone faster had the bolts not been rusted in place), and then just had to pull the master cylinder off the firewall, the steering shaft, and the e-brake cable. After everything was loose, just used the cherry picker to lift up the rear, two people on each front corner, and picked it up, and had my Little Cousin roll the chassis out from under it. Maybe two hours total.

No new pics yet...... Heath sandblasted my frame for me last Friday, and I got it painted with some good ole Eastwood frame paint. My gear install should be finished tomorrow after a small setback. My 9 inch third turned out to be cracked, and thanks to my good ole buddy Kyle for giving me another third to build. Once I get the gear install done. I can finish putting those axles together, and start cutting the stock suspension out from under the CJ frame. Then I can outboard my front springs, and start to work on my rear four link. Once I get it back as a roller, then I will stick my motor/tranny/trans on the chassis, and put the body back on it.

I'm thinking of just going with a piece of 5x3 1/4 inch angle iron. Maybe weld some strap to tie them into body mounts, as well as drill and bolt through the tub. Then I will probably borrow my good ole buddy Heath's bender to make some rub rails/step rails coming off of them.

Finished up all my backetry today. Was hoping my axles would be ready to put back together, and then I could start getting the new suspension under it. I may go ahead and cut the stock suspension out tomorrow, and just put it on jackstands. At least then I can go ahead and weld on my front bumper, and get my front springs outboarded, and then possibly get the four link burned in at the rear.

I got the all the stock bracketry removed, and the four link brackets burned in on the frame. I still have to weld my coil spring brackets onto the frame, and tweek them a little to get them welded on the axle. I also have to move one of my upper control arm mounts over about an inch and a half on the axle truss. Then I am going to truss the rear accross the back, and connect the two trusses with tube.

Then get the body work and paint done, and put the tub back on the chassis.

Well I have decided to use the radius arms for the front instead of the leaf springs I picked up. If anyone has any of these parts please let me know if you want to get rid of them.

They're way too spendy, but here's a set you can copy pretty easily (http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-13211-new-coil-spring-towers-1966-77-pair.html)
They want about $45/ea for a complete set of the lower retainers... IIRC they're the same for all 4wd 76 to 79 Ford pickups (and maybe 2wds too...I dunno about that one for sure though) so they'll be easy to come up with. I'll look around on FSB to see if I can find you anything.

If your going comp cut and you have a torch cut them close to where you want them bolt them to the jeep then heat em up and pull them around. Comp cut wouldn't leave much to have to bend. I have seen a few guys on Pirate do it.

Okay I got my hose (cost me less than 50 bucks) for the propane now, I just need to get the fitting that connects it to the tank. I also found out that one of the local propane places will loan forklift tanks out for free as long as you buy all your propane from them so I will probably go that route. Heath do you know if Carpco will do the bends in the steel plate like on the diagram I posted. Someone told me that they had a brake, and did bends. If Carpco will do it, then I will just go by there, and buy a sheet, and have them go ahead and cut, and bend up the boatsides while I am there.

12-28-2010, 07:17 PM
Heath, I already checked with Wright Brothers and they can't do anything thicker than 1/8th. I am having Alvin check on it at Carpco because he usually gives us good prices since my parents have bought so much steel through them. As far as their brake being in New Boston I don't really care because they will be doing the transporting it.
Josh, If you have someone that close to you that has a brake that bend sheets over 48" wide, then that would probably be the way to go. Heck if the price they come back with is too much I may just bring it up your way if you think we can get it bent cheap or for free.

Got a lot of work done today on the jeep. It is almost sitting on all 4's! Put the axles back together (except for the brakes), and put the rear axle in, and got it all bolted up. Also Heath brought me some 36's to use as rollers, and wheeling tires until I get my hands on some 38's. Then I rolled the front axle under there to get it ready to set up tomorrow or sunday.

I don't know what I was thinking when I cut them. Actually I know exactly what I did wrong. I had the outriggers that I had already put on the frame to outboard the leaf springs, and then I mounted my radius arm bracket there. I should have cut them back off, and moved them back but it was hard to visualize until it was all put together. Also the angles looks steep in the pics because it is actually sitting a couple inches above ride height there.
ElkyRacer
01-02-2011, 08:24 PM
Butt those radius arm mounts up against your link mounts for the rear! :tekst-toppie: More length=more flex. Then you can make a skidplate from arm to arm, and have a completely smooth belly! :D

Yeah yeah yeah..... I am going to rework and re-extend them this week, and move the mounts further back.
Hopper
01-02-2011, 11:47 PM
Woah, I thought you were gonna stretch the front a lot more than that.
No big problem though - re-extending the arms will be no big deal since they're square tube.
What I'd do in your shoes is what I did to my Bronco - ditch the frame outriggers and build a crossmember to mount the RAs to. You'll gain some chassis rigidity as well as a great extra mount for your extra long drivetrain and future skid plate.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/750423/fullsize/weld-inspection-#2-007.jpg
You have a day picked out to work on it a lot? I can dig my 180 mig outta the shop and we can burn a massive amount of electricity one day :D
X2elite
01-03-2011, 08:58 AM
Well I have to find some smaller square tubing to use as slugs before I can extend the arm, and as far as building a crossmember I don't think I can inboard the frame end anymore than I already have without having some crazy angles. The CJ frame is alow more narrow than a bronco frame. So I will probably just extend the arms about a foot, and move the mounts back about a foot.
Hopper
01-03-2011, 11:24 AM
You really need to sleeve the arms in addition to slugging them, so take that into account when you're looking for materials.
The CJ frame is more narrow than the Bronco's yes, but you also have to consider that the radius arm wedges are angled so that the arms point in towards the center of the vehicle. If you force them out too far you'll bind your C bushings and inhibit travel as well as cause them to wear prematurely. I extended my arms somewhere in the neighborhood of 13"-14" and had to inboard my mounts 4"-6". Take a look at Duff's long radius arms - to keep the mount under the frame rails they put a huge bend in them (it's marketed for "tire clearance," but this is the real reason). IMO radius arm mounts really need to be tied together anyway; that's a lot of force on two points on the frame...
X2elite
01-03-2011, 12:09 PM
Well I will probably slug them, and then just run some angle iron under them (like skids down the bottom of them) to add some strength. Once I get the stuff I need to do that I will let you know, and you can swing by and help me clean up the mess. LOL
X2elite
01-04-2011, 11:05 AM
OK, on the boatsides I can get you a set for $175.00 they come 48" long, and will need to be trimmed based on how long you need them for your particular application. Let me know if anyone wants a set, because I will probably have mine made in the next day or two.

The weight difference from the 3/16 to 3/8's in those particular guards is over 100 lbs. Plus I am confident that the 3/16 will hold the total weight of my rig. My rig will have plenty of weight anyway.

With the wife on bedrest, and some apartment renovations going on for the last two months I haven't had much time to work on it. However, have gotten a lot of the body work done. Should be ready for paint in the next few days. Now that Phil is back in town we should be able to get the suspension finished up, and the drivetrain in place maybe next weekend. Then the body goes back on the chassis. Enjoy the pics.

OK got the engine cleaned up, and almost ready to go in Saturday. Plus Phil finished the custom motor mounts that we had started on last week. Also got the inside of the tub lined, and some paint on the body finally. Basecoat is on, still have to color sand it, and then get some clear on it. Have't sprayed the hood yet, because we have something different in mind for it. Here are some teaser pics....
Oh yeah... we still have to line the fender wells too.

It's ok John. I am contemplating just keeping it at the shop now. I feel like I might actually make some progess on it now. LOL I do want to check out that new trailer though. I will very likely be spending some nights down at the shop this week now that I have the tub back on it. Get it all buttoned up, finish up cutting down the armor, mount the grill back on it, so I can weld up my tube fenders. That way when I get the tube bent up for my sliders, and armor, I can prep it all, and get some paint on all of that, and reinstall them permanently.
